Bistro Milano on 55th between 5th and 6th, on the south side nearer to 6th. Very good Northern Italian fare at reasonable prices. Not the rushed and impersonal service prevalent in many Midtown eateries.
The Tricatore salad is a great starter.

This is a Depression-era photo of a homeless man sleeping on a park bench.
Note the stylish 1 ¾” cuffs, smartly creased trousers, great hat, and solid leather shoes (and I think they are polished). It was a tight job market which sought serious men, not goofs in sweats and polos. There is a lesson here.
